Top 10 Worst Wildfires in World History
A wildfire, also known as a wildland fire, forest fire, vegetation fire, grass fire, peat fire, bushfire, or hill fire, is an uncontrolled fire often occurring in wildland areas, but which can also consume houses or agricultural resources. These are some of the worst wildfires in recorded history:
1. | The Milford Flat Fire which burned in 2007 in Utah is statistically the largest fire burning in Utah's history. At the time,Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. stated that it is the biggest fire burning in the world. This fire burned 363,052 acres. |
2. | The 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park Fire was started by a lightning strike near Rattlesnake Island in Okanagan Mountain Park in British Columbia, Canada, during one of the driest summers in the past decade. The final size of the firestorm was over 250 square kilometres (61,776 acres). 60 fire departments, 1,400 armed forces troops and 1,000 forest fire fighters took part in controlling the fire, but were largely helpless in stopping the disaster. |
3. | The Yellowstone National Park Fire of 1988 burned well over 793,880 acres (321,271 ha) before the winter snows put out the flames. (See: Yellowstone fires of 1988) |
4. | One of the largest known wild fires, was the Great Fire of 1910, that burned in Montana and Idaho. |
5. | Siege of 1987 Refers to a complex of fires in northern California and southern Oregon that burned a total of about 650,000 acres. These fires were started by a large lightning storm in late August. The storm started roughly 1600 new fires, most caused by dry lightning. Firefighting efforts continued into October, before the majority of the fires were controlled. |
6. | McNally Fire Sequoia NF burned roughly 151,000 acres in 2002, and is the largest wildfire recorded in the forest's history. |
7. | The 2003 Canberra bushfires infinged on the Australian capital itself. A firestorm raced through Canberra suburbs on January 18, 2003 and damaged or destroyed 431 homes. |
8. | The 2007 Greek fires were some of the deadliest in world history, killing at least 64 people in Peloponnese and Evia. |
9. | The Zaca Fire in California in 2007 - The blaze was started July 4 by sparks from water pipe repair equipment. The fire had a containment cost of $117 million. It was contained on September 2. The Zaca Fire burned Los Padres NF, CA. It burned 240,207 acres. It is the 2nd largest recorded fire in California. |
10. | The Malibu California Fires - From the high desert to the Pacific Ocean, out-of-control wildfires engulfed swaths of drought-parched Southern California, claiming one life, destroying several homes and a church in Malibu, and forcing an entire community to evacuate. Thousands more homes remained at risk as hot, dry Santa Ana desert winds continued to churn into the region. The fire burned more than 40,000 acres. Hundreds of patients were being evacuated from a hospital and nursing homes in San Diego County |

Top 25 TV Shows Today: Slightly Gender-Biased but Addictive
- Seinfeld - The funniest show ever! Kramer coming in the door. George's monologues. Elaine's dancing. There is a reason why it is on 3 different channels for 6 hours everyday of the week.
- Entourage - If you could only be Vinny Chase (or atleast a part of his entourage).
- Man vs. Wild - If we are watching TV to live vicariously through its characters, being Bear Grylls would either be the coolest thing imaginable, or the worst.
- The Office - It is hilarious even if you've never worked a day in an office. Who wouldn't love to have a boss like Michael and co-workers like Dwight and Jim?
- Lost - So many questions, so few answers. What's the black fog? Will they get off the island? Why are they there? etc. etc.
- Family Guy - If you don't think Stewie is the funniest character in a long time then, "Pipe down, Lois."
- Late Night with Conan O'Brien - The funniest combination of opening monologue, skits, and interviews. Best of all the late-night talk shows.
- Around the Horn - No need for hours of Sportscenter. This is the freshest, quickest, widest views on what's happening in the world of sports.
- The Unit - It is like going to the theater and seeing a new Schwarzenegger / Tom Clancy movie every week.
- Heroes - Takes you back to your childhood dream of being Superman; or fulfills your dream of being an invisible mind-reader today.
- Two and Half Men - Whether you love or hate Charlie Sheen in real life, you will like his wild and drunk character on the show.
- Nip/Tuck - Fulfills America's obsessive interest in the beautiful, rich and famous while making you never want to be any of three.
- Studio 60 - The best writers in television. The show centers around characters and relationships, and the dialogue is amazingly complex. People so so much with so few words.
- King of Queens - These modern "Honeymooners" will make you love every aspect of your own life.
- Friday Night Lights - With America's obsession with football, gorgeous people, action, romance and comedy, I'd be shocked if you didn't get hooked.
- NCIS - If CSI and Law and Order is getting old (or you are old) give this hip show a try. Get to know the characters, because it delivers on every other level, and it might be your favorite show.
- Survivor - The best reality network TV show ever! Every person of every age can and wants to participate in this return to the wild for $1 million.
- The Sopranos - I take that back, if you could only be Tony Soprano (or part of his entourage).
- Pardon the Interruption (PTI) - The original catalyst for what sports television has become today, the only reason its not any higher is because around the horn has fresher, younger and more opinions.
- Real World/ Road Rules Challenge - The best show on MTV (yeah I realize it supposed to be "Music" TV). If you get to know the people (all from the originals in reality TV) you will laugh, cry and cheer right with them.
- Grey's Anatomy - This is a look into the fascinating lives of surgeons, and possibly the first show that women and older people will agree with me.
- Jeopardy - The best game show ever! Like Bob Barker, we can only pray that Alex Trebek will find the fountain of youth and live to give answers before the question forever.
- The O'Reilly Factor - Whether you lean far-right or far-left, like the New York Times, you will always be interested or be aware of these opinions.
- Sunrise Earth - I realize, its hardly a show. You may have never even heard of it (and rightfully so if you don't have Discovery Channel in HD), but it is the best wildlife show on TV. It runs real-time and follows the sunrise in amazing places around the globe.
- Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Funniest stupid cartoon show ever to originate on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. I swear, it might be hard, but give it a chance, you won't be dissapointed.

Top 5 Biggest Upsets in Sports History
Everyone likes to root for an underdog. Here are a couple sporting events where that support paid off.
1. | Appalachian State beats #5 Michigan in the season opener at Michigan Stadium (2007): They led nearly the entire game and with seconds left, gave up a big play that put Michigan in the position to win with this field goal... |
2. | U.S. beats Soviets Olympic ice hockey, 1980: Not only a huge upset in sports, but an unbelievable moment in the context of American history. |
3. | Buster Douglas KOs Mike Tyson for heavyweight championship, 1990: Tyson was seen as invincible at the time, making his improbable loss to little known Buster Douglas all the more surprising. |
4. | Golden State Warriors eliminate Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2007 playoffs: The Mavericks were the biggest favorites to win the west since the Kobe/Shaq Lakers. |
5. | N.C. State knocks off Houston to win 1983 NCAA championship. Everyone counted Jimmy Valvano and his N.C. State team out... but everyone was wrong |
