Top 5 Biggest Upsets in Sports History

Everyone likes to root for an underdog. Here are a couple sporting events where that support paid off.

1. Appalachian State beats #5 Michigan in the season opener at Michigan Stadium (2007): They led nearly the entire game and with seconds left, gave up a big play that put Michigan in the position to win with this field goal...
2. U.S. beats Soviets Olympic ice hockey, 1980: Not only a huge upset in sports, but an unbelievable moment in the context of American history.
3. Buster Douglas KOs Mike Tyson for heavyweight championship, 1990: Tyson was seen as invincible at the time, making his improbable loss to little known Buster Douglas all the more surprising.
4. Golden State Warriors eliminate Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2007 playoffs: The Mavericks were the biggest favorites to win the west since the Kobe/Shaq Lakers.
5. N.C. State knocks off Houston to win 1983 NCAA championship. Everyone counted Jimmy Valvano and his N.C. State team out... but everyone was wrong

Owen Wilson isn't the only Depressed Celebrity

Here are just some of the famous people in the world who are (or have been) depressed (and many of them have contemplated suicide if not attempted):

  • Abraham Lincoln (1809- 1865) - President of the United States
  • Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) - Scientist, polemic, revolutionary, doctor and analyst. - "According to numerous biographers, Freud often obsessed about his sex life and money; he wrote 900 love letters to the woman of his affections; he suffered bouts of depression and despair; he frequently seethed with resentment at rivals...Freud's demons and quirks sparked his desire to learn more about human motivation and behavior."
  • Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) - Actress, model - "(Marilyn) couldn't beat chronic depression--and ultimately paid for it with her life. At the end of her short, wild career, Monroe was under the constant care of a psychiatrist, and was prone to mixing prescription drugs with alcohol."
  • Greg Louganis (1960-) - Olympic 5-time medalist in diving - "Louganis...first experienced depression at age 12 when a doctor told him that because of knee damage, he would have to give up gymnastics and his dream of competing in the Olympics...Louganis attempted suicide by downing aspirin and Ex-Lax, trying again twice before the age of 18. While counseling sessions accomplished little, Louganis found that diving - asport less grueling for the knees- was a satisfying way to express his physical talents. By 1971 he had qualified for the Junior Olympics. Fire years later, at the age of 16, Louganis won a silver medal at the Montreal Olympics in the 10-meter platform diving competition. He went on to win gold medals in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic games."
  • Alanis Morissette (1974-) - Musician, songwriter - "While on tour to promote her platinum album, Jagged Little Pill, Morissette began to feel helpless. 'Schedule-wise, my health and peace of mind weren't a priority,' she told reporters. 'there had been this dissonance in the midst of all the external success. Because on the one hand, I was expected to be overjoyed by it, and at the same time I was disillusioned by it.' To combat her depression, Morissette traveled to India and Cuba, read, competed in triathlons and reconnected with friendships that she had let lapse. Feeling better within a year, she went on to produce a second hit album."
  • Georgia O'Keefe (1887-1986) - Artist - "Georgia O'Keefe was so deathly afraid of being unoriginal that she destroyed all of her paintings shortly before her 30th birthday. In the 1920's her husband had an affair with a woman 40 years his junior and O'Keefe was briefly hospitalized for depression, but emerged feeling reborn."
  • Jean-Claude Van Damme (1960-) - Actor -"Throughout his vibrant career in film, Van Damme has used drugs, been diagnosed with cyclic manic depression and accused of spousal abuse. As a teen-ager, he took refuge in karate, ballet and in daydreams, which he calls "rosy dreams". Today he takes medication to help mitigate the effects of his illness."
  • Tipper Gore (1948-) - Advocate and wife of former Vice President, Al Gore - "Tipper Gore succumbed to depression after her son nearly died in a car accident in 1989. She was diagnosed around 1991, tried various medications and sought professional guidance from a social worker friend. She fought to raise awareness for sufferers by coordinating the first-ever White House Conference on Mental Illness."
  • Sting (1951-) - musician, artist - "Sting has spent the past few years wrestling with grand issues: dredging up painful childhood memories for the book; agonizing over global politics; and reuniting, for the first time in more than a decade, with his old band mates from the Police for one feverishly anticipated, ultimately unsatisfying performance. "I was in a depression for a year or two," he says matter-of-factly. So as he directs this session, he seems relieved to be in a situation he can control. And for Sting, qualities like control, focus and structure are essential to his ability to create his distinctive, ever evolving sounds."
  • Owen Wilson (1968-) - actor - "At 12:10 p.m. on August 26, 2007, Owen Wilson was rushed to St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, by ambulance. Initial reports cited the reason as dehydration, however it has been reported that he was discovered with superficial wounds to his wrists and a near-empty bottle of pills in the bathroom of his Santa Monica home, by his younger brother Luke. Andrew called 911 at 11:59 a.m. Police subsequently confirmed that they were called to the home following reports of a suicide attempt; they resolved the call in just under five hours. Wilson was later transferred to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, where his condition was described as serious, but later upgraded to good condition. On August 27, 2007, Wilson issued a statement: "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."

"I am not gay!" Larry Craig Quotes

Larry Edwin Craig (born July 20, 1945) is an American politician from the U.S. state of Idaho. A Republican, he has served in the United States Senate since 1991. Previously he served in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Idaho's 1st congressional district (1982-1991). Including his service in the House of Representatives, Craig is the second-longest serving member of the United States Congress in Idaho history, trailing only William Edgar Borah. Craig was arrested and pled guilty to disorderly conduct in a men's bathroom in 2007.

  • I am not gay!
  • A free state cannot exist, our free state of the United States collectively, cannot exist without the right of the people to defend themselves.
  • Agreements are always the product of time and place.
  • Breast cancer deaths in America have been declining for more than a decade. Much of that success is due to early detection and better treatments for women. I strongly encourage women to get a mammogram.
  • Congress has a responsibility to make sure our taxpayer dollars are being spent responsibly and effectively, and at the same time, that our men and women in uniform have everything they need to carry out the War on Terror.
  • Consumers are increasingly feeling that they are being taken for a ride.
  • Flag desecration is not a constitutional issue for the courts. It is a political one that belongs to the people.
  • I'm for anything that lets people come here to work legally. There are more protections for workers who are here legally than for those who are not. It's also safer for the workers and employers have a more consistent pool of workers.
  • Laws protecting the United States flag do not cut away at the freedom of speech guaranteed in the First Amendment... Congress made this position clear upon passage of the Flag Protection Act of 1989, which prohibited desecration of the flag.
  • The simple truth is, the short-term solution is for the FDA to allow more importation of safe vaccines from other nations. But the long-term solution is to get more vaccine production within the U.S.
  • We came to Iraq to liberate them and to make our world a safer place.

Michael Vick's List of Screw Ups

This is a big change for Michael Vick, instead of the entire Cincinnati Bengals running after him, he is making a run at the Bengals - that is, at the number of times you can screw up. Here is a list of the all the times Vick has messed up:

  • Weed/marijuana hidden in the bottom of a water bottle at the Miami airport.
  • Drug raids at a house he owned (which lead to fed finding a... )
  • Dog fighting ring and animal cruelty towards 60 dogs in a house he owned.
  • Settled a lawsuit filed by a former girlfriend who said he knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Vick surrounded himself with unsavory associates, two with criminal records for drug trafficking.
  • Two friends of Vick pocketed someone's fancy watch at the Atlanta airport, the watch's owner said a Falcons executive offered him money to keep Vick's name out of a police report.
  • Lying to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about everything
  • Thinking his friends would stick up for him and not rat him out

ListAfterList.com – Room for Error? Or Room for Air?

    Greetings Listers!

Let’s play the word association game! No. 2 pencils… book bags… lunchbox… recess… pop quiz. Yep, it is that time of the year again. The first day of school has crept up on summer like a bully from the back of the bus. And whether you are jumping on your first yellow bus, attending a new school, or driving to night classes after work, the first day of class can always be a little unnerving. Do you have enough pens? Pencils? Paper? Did you buy the right books? What are you going to wear? Is your teacher going to be cool? Who will you sit next to? But don’t worry, because there are always those cute icebreaker games - that tend to make you more uncomfortable instead of less.

“Hi, my name is Ryan. I am from Canton, Ohio. I am 23 years old and I visited the world’s largest ball of string for the 17th straight year again this summer.”

The crazy thing is – once you are done, you start to miss those annoying little things. All those people were right; school days are honestly the best days of your life. Back then, there was plenty of room for error – now, there is barely room for air. Grade school, childhood, high school and even college is a breeze compared to being an adult. But with the responsibilities of being a working adult, come the freedoms and adventures of life. So whether you are lugging your backpack or shoulder-saddling your briefcase out the door in the morning, remember this: “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” So, what do you see in that glass?

    Largest Superhero Packages

Superheroes may not all be packing heat or have a fully-loaded utility belt, but all those men in tights have one thing in common... large packages. Here are the superheroes with the biggest packages (measured by sock stuffing ability):

    1. The Incredible Hulk - 4 ½ socks - everything else is so large (and unfortunately for Bruce Banner - green...)
    2. Superman - 3 ½ socks - come on, he is Super"Man", even though Clark Kent seems pretty insecure
    3. Captain America - 3 socks - Steve Rogers is Captain America, not Captain Asia
    4. Human Torch - 3 socks - Johnny Storm's line-up of ladies is proof
    5. Batman - 1 sock - the fact that Bruce Wayne needs that utility belt speaks for something
    6. Spiderman - ½ sock - unfortunately for Peter Parker, the spider bite didn't cause any swelling
